Frequently Asked Questions

Is counseling a worthwhile thing to invest time and finances in?

  • Untreated mental stress and/or conditions can lengthen treatment time and be more costly in the long run
  • Maintaining and improving your emotional health is an investment in yourself and benefits the rest of your life
  • Therapy helps one deal with the day to day stress as well as current economic stressors

Which intervention is the most promising?

  • Interventions are like flavors of ice cream, there is not one flavor that works for everyone
  • Clients each have their own individual strengths, struggles, concerns or needs and their therapy is a combination created specifically for them at this point in their life

What does a professional counselor practice?

The practice of Professional Counseling includes the application of mental health, psychological, or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development, as well as pathology.

What is a professional counseling specialty?

A professional counseling specialty is narrowly focused, requiring advanced knowledge in the field founded on the premise that all Professional Counselors must first meet the requirements for the general practice of professional counseling.

What are the educational backgrounds of a Counselor?

  • Social Work, MSW
  • Marriage and Family Therapist, MFT
  • Professional Counselor, MAPC or MA
  • Psychologist, PhD

What type of disclosure should one look for regarding a Counselor?

  • State Licensed (Credentials & Number)
  • Educational Background & Experience
  • Theoretic Orientation

  • Techniques Utilized

Is there anything else that would be helpful to know while looking for a Counselor?

Therapists tend to state they are eclectic in their approach, which is good. That just means they use what ever strategy that is needed. Cognitive Behavioral, Family Systems and Client Centered are a good combination. For more interactive counseling, Expressive/Creative Art therapists use hands on modalities to help client’s explore and express inner emotions along with conversation.

All therapists should have client’s sign an Informed Consent, which outlines confidentiality, scope of practice, benefit and risk of process, and emergency contacts. This document is imperative to an ethical practice and client-therapist relationship.
